Effective Protection Against Identity Theft And Fraud

ID theft is devastating, find out how to protect yourself
1. Only print your initials and last name on your personal cheques. If you prefer, put your cell number instead of your home phone, and P.O. Box instead of your street address. Your bank has all your information and knows how you sign your cheques. Never put your PIN # on your cheque.
2. On the back of your credit card on the signature block. Write down "PHOTO ID REQUIRED".
3. When asked to write your credit card number on your cheque for payments, only write the last four number of your account. Because anyone who's handling the cheque will have access to your credit card information.
4. Photocopy your driver license, credit card, passport etc. on both sides and keep it in a safe place at home. This way you will know the account # and phone # to call to cancel in case of lost or stolen.
5. If you lose your wallet, passport, credit card, etc. Phone as soon as possible to cancel everything. Do a police report immediately as proof that you were diligent to the credit providers.
6. You should always place a fraud alert on your name and Social Insurance Number by calling the national credit office. This way no one will be able to apply for a credit card or bank loan under your name on the Internet.
Highly recommend you keep a copy of all your important documents at home in a safe.
These are the numbers you need to contact about your lost or stolen wallet, credit card, etc:
1.) Equifax Canada: 1-877-249-2705
2.) TransUnion: 1-877-525-3823
